Park Bench Restoration

A tired cast-iron park bench, brought back to its former glory. New African teak, a refinished frame, and a good stack of garage hours. Here's how it came together, in five phases.

The cast-iron ends came in tired but solid. I took a wire brush and cleaner to every scroll and curve, worked them back to bare metal, primed, and repainted, hunting for the green that landed closest to the original.

The teak arrived straight from the mill, rough, sun-darkened, solid all the way through. The mill was kind enough to plane it (I don't own a planer), but the rest was on me: jointing the edges dead straight, then ripping it down into slat stock.

Ripped the boards down to slats, then ran a router along every edge for a clean bevel, the small detail that keeps a bench from feeling like a pile of lumber bolted to some iron.

First coat of oil

The color wakes up

A coat of teak oil and the whole thing came alive, grain popping, color deepening. Seven slats in a row, finished and ready to go back on the frame.

Reassembly

Freshly painted cast iron, new carriage bolts, and teak that looks a hundred years newer than the frame it's bolted to. Strapped up, buttoned down, and done.

Back in service

Cleaned up, tightened down, and ready to sit on. Good for another few decades.
